As sources of cognition Buddhism recognizes the world of sensation (Pratyaksa-pramana), the world of inference (anumana) and the world of pure intuition (dhyana). Thus sense-data, reason and inner experience resulting from intuition will all provide the content of knowledge. Besides these we can appeal in every case to the Word that has been uttered from the world of perfect enlightenment (Bodhi), i.e., the Buddha (the Enlightened).

Thus, the Buddha always preaches the self-contentment for the benefit of the Bhikkhus as follow: The robes or clothes they receive, whether coarse or fine; alms or food they receive, whether unpalatable or delicious; the abodes or houses they receive, whether simple or luxurious. Those who satisfy with these three conditions can reduce the desires, and at the same time develop the habits and values of simple living.

While Prajna is distinctly pointing out the transcendental wisdom.

(II) Những lời Phật dạy về “Trí” trong Kinh Pháp Cú—The Buddha’s teachings on “Jnana” in the Dharmapada Sutra:

An intelligent person associates with a wise man, even for a moment, he will quickly understand the Dharma, as the tongue tastes the flavour of soup (Dharmapada 65).

Kẻ trí đã xa lìa niệm lự mừng lo, nên chẳng còn bị lay động vì khổ lạc—Good people give up all attachments, they don’t talk about sensual craving. The wise show neither elation nor depression; therefore, they are not affected by happiness or sorrow (Dharmapada 83).

Được vậy mới thật là người đạo đức, trí tuệ và ngay thẳng—Neither for the sake of oneself, nor for the sake of another, a wise man does nothing wrong; he desires not son, wealth, or kingdom by doing wrong; he seeks his own success not by unjust means, then he is good, wise and righteous (Dharmapada 84).

9) Con thiên nga chỉ bay được giữa không trung, người có thần thông chỉ bay được khỏi mặt đất, duy bậc đại trí, trừ hết ma quân mới bay được khỏi thế gian nầy—Swans can only fly in the sky, man who has supernatural powers can only go through air by their psychic powers. Video Thuc va Than Trong Tai Sanh(Thich Nhat Tu)

According to the Abhidharma, weighty karma, wholesome or unwholesome, is a weighty or serious action, or karma of such powerful moral weight that it cannot be replaced by any other karma as the determinant of rebirth. It is so called because it produces its effect for certain in this life or in the next life. When there is no weighty karma to condition the future birth a death-proximate (asanna) karma might operate.

On the wholesome side, this karma is the attainment of the jhanas, other than speech and body karmas.

b) Nếu là bất thiện nghiệp có năm loại trọng nghiệp đi cùng với tà kiến chối bỏ đạo đức luân lý—On the unwholesome side, it is the five heinous crimes together with a fixed wrong view that denies the basis for morality:

· Gây thương tích cho một vị Phật: Như Đề Bà Đạt Đa phải mất hết thần lực và tái sanh vào ác đạo vì tội đã làm chảy máu thân Phật—Causing the wounding of a Buddha, i.e. Devadatta lost his psychic powers and was born in a woeful state because he wounded the Buddha.

· Chia rẽ Tăng Già: Như Đề Bà Đạt Đa phải đọa vào ác đạo vì đã gây chia rẽ trong Tăng đoàn—Maliciously creating a schism in the Sangha, i.e Devadatta who was reborn in a woeful state because he caused a schism in the Sangha.

· Sát hại một vị A La Hán: Murdering an Arahant.

As the Buddha remarked, King Ajatasatru would have attained the first state of sainthood if he had not committed parricide. In this case, the powerful evil karma obstructed his spiritual attainment.

· Giết Mẹ: Matricide (killing one’s own mother).

Thí dụ như em họ của Phật là Đề Bà Đạt Đa, vì tham vọng mà tạo nên trọng tội làm đả thương Phật và chia rẽ Tăng Già, nên phải mất hết thần thông và tái sanh vào cõi địa ngục—If someone were to develop the jhanas and later were to commit one of the heinous crimes, his good karma would be obliterated by the evil deed, and the latter would generate rebirth into a state of misery. For example, the Buddha’s ambitious cousin Devadatta lost his psychic powers and was reborn in hell for wounding the Buddha and causing a schism in the Sangha.

If someone were first to commit one of the heinous crimes, he could not later reach a sublime or supermundane attainment, because the evil karma would create an insurmountable obstruction. Thus King Ajatasattu, while listening to the Buddha’s speak the Samannaphala Sutra, the Discourse on the Fruits of Recluseship, had all the other conditions for reaching stream-entry, but because he had killed his father, King Bimbisara, he could not attain the path and fruit.

Video Nagarjuna: Founder of Mahayana Buddhism

Tên đầy đủ là Trung Quán Luận, do Bồ tát Long Thọ biên soạn và Thanh Mục Bồ tát chú thích, Cưu Ma La Thập đời Tần dịch sang Hoa Ngữ. Theo Ngài Long Thọ thì trung đạo là chân tánh của vạn hữu, không sanh không diệt, không hiện hữu, không phi hiện hữu—The Madhyamika-sastra, attributed to the Bodhisattva Nagarjuna as creator, and Nilakasus as compiler, translated into Chinese by Kumarajiva in 409 A.D. It is the principal work of the Madhyamika, or Middle School. The teaching of this school opposes the rigid categories of existence and non-existence, and denies the two extremes of production or creation and non-production and other antitheses, in the interests of a middle or superior way. According to Nagarjuna, the Middle Way is true nature of all things which neither is born nor dies, and cannot be defined by either the two extremes, existence or non-existence

(I) Trung Luận tông Ấn Độ—The Madhyamika School in India:

(A) Lịch sử thành lập Trung Luận Tông—The history of the formation of the Madhyamaka sect: Được gọi là Trung Quán Tông vì bộ phái nầy chú trọng đến quan điểm trung dung (madhyamika-pratipat). In his first sermon at Banares, the Buddha preached the Middle Path, which is neither self-mortification nor a life devoted to the pleasures of the senses. However, the middle path, as advocated by the adherents of the Madhyamika system, is not quite the same. Here, the middle path stands for the non-acceptance of the two views concerning existence and non-existence, eternity and non-eternity, self and non-self, and so on. In short, it advocates neither the theory of reality nor that of the unreality of the world, but merely of relativity. It is, however, to be noted that the middle path propounded at Banares has an ethical meaning, while that of the Madhyamikas is a metaphysical concept. The Middle School of which doctrine was based on the three main works of Nagajuna. The most striking feature of Madhyamaka philosophy is its ever-recurring use of ‘Sunya’ and ‘Sunyata.’ So this system is also known as the school with the philosophy that asserts Sunya as the characterization of Reality. Besides, there was a galaxy of Madhyamika thinkers, such as Aryadeva in the third century A.D.), Buddhapalita in the fifth century, Bhavaviveka in the fifth century, Chandrakirti in the sixth century, and Santideva in the seventh century .

Bộ Trung Quán Luận do Ngài Long Thọ biên soạn, may mắn nguyên bản tiếng Phạn vẫn còn tồn tại. Bản Hán văn do Ngài Cưu Ma La Thập dịch. Cho nên nó không thể diễn đạt được bằng bất cứ ngôn ngữ nào của nhân loại—The first and principle work of the three main works of the Middle School, composed by Nagarjuna. Fortunately the Sanskrit text of it has been preserved. It was translated into Chinese by Kumarajiva. It is a treatise of 400 verses in which Nagarjuna refutes certain wrong views of Mahayana or of general philosophers, thereby rejecting all realistic and pluralistic ideas, and indirectly establishing his monistic doctrine. The Madhyamaka system is neither scepticism nor agnosticism. It is an open invitation to every one to see Reality face to face. According to the Survey of Buddhism, Sangharakshita’s summary of the Madhyamaka system as follows: “Buddhism may be compared to a tree. Buddha’s transcendental realization is the root. The basic Buddhism is the trunk, the distinctive Mahayana doctrines the branches, and the schools and subschools of the Mahayana the flowers. Now the function of flowers, however beautiful, is to produce fruit. Philosophy, to be more than barren speculation, must find its reason and its fulfilment in a way of life; thought should lead to action. Doctrine gives birth to method. The Bodhisattva ideal is the perfectly ripened fruit of the whole vast tree of Buddhism. Just as the fruit encloses the seeds, so within the Bodhisattva Ideal are recombined all the different and sometimes seemingly divergent elements of Mahayana.” According to Jaidev Singh in An Introduction To Madhyamaka Philosophy, we have seen the main features of Madhyamaka Philosophy. It is both philosophy and mysticism. By its dialectic, its critical probe into all the categories of thought, it relentlessly exposes the pretensions of Reason to know Truth. The hour of Reason’s despair, however, becomes the hour of truth. The seeker now turns to meditation on the arious forms of ‘Sunyata,’ and the practice of ‘Prajnaparamitas.’ By moral and yogic practices, he is prepared to receive the Truth. In the final stage of Prajna, the wheels of imagination are stopped, the discursive mind is stilled, and in that silence Reality stoops to kiss the eye of the aspirant; he receives the accolade of prajna and becomes the knighterrant of Truth. It is an experience of a different dimension, spaceless, timeless, which is beyond the province of thought and speech. Hence it cannot be expressed in any human language.

Vì thế Lục Tổ không truyền y bát cho những vị kế thừa nữa: After the Buddha entered Maha-Nirvana, the first Patriarch of Buddhism was one of the Buddha great disciples, Maha Kasyapa. According to this Zen tradition, in order to become a Patriarch, the highest virtuous Buddhist Master must receive the Buddha 'pat‘a bowl,' the bowl which the Buddha used to receive food offering, and ‘robe’ from the Patriarch before him. Thus, for over 1,000 years, there were twenty-eight Indian Patriarchs, each having the responsibility to practice and to uphold the proper Dharma of Buddha. Eventually the twenty-eighth Patriarch named Bodhidharma came to China and also became the first of Six Patriarchs of Zen Buddhism in China. Overall, there were 33 official Patriarchs in Zen Buddhism. After the Sixth Patriarch, Hui-Neng, this tradition of formally passing on Patriarchy was discontinued. Thus Hui Neng did not pass down the Buddha’s patra bowl and robe to his highest and most deserving disciples.
